Introduction to Pointillism painting workshop

Art Workshops in Wirral

'Introduction to Pointillism' (SB001)

This workshop was last run on 21st August 2014. Please contact me to request a repeat running of this workshop. The Pointillism workshop was initially run as a half-day workshop, but may be extended to a full-day. The longer the day, the more we achieve! More information on my workshops...

Step-by-step guide to Pointillist painting
Step-by-step tuition guiding students through the production of a Pointillist-influenced painting

My understanding and use of colour is directly attributable to early studies of the colour theory of Pointillist artists such as Seurat and Signac. I believe that studying the work of these artists will similarly aid students' understanding of colour.

10:00 - 10:15

The day will commence with a brief discussion of Pointillist colour theory and an illustrated demonstration of its application.

10:15 - 11:15

Students will then be guided through the replication of a small area of a Pointillist painting by either Seurat or Signac in order for students to acquire a practical understanding of the technique.

Students will create their own Pointillist painting using skills acquired during the workshop. I will supply the reference, which may be photographs or still life objects.

Please note that timings are approximate - I will make every effort to ensure that students are fully conversant with appropriate principles before moving on to subsequent stages - there is no rush and you will be under no pressure or expectations. We will need to work in acrylics rather than oils in order to ensure that colours remain vivid and to ensure you have a finished piece at the end of the workshop. Work will be produced on a relatively small scale (approximately A5 to A4). As a matter of course, we will also cover aspects of composition and choice of subject matter. By the end of the workshop you should be familiar with the basic colour theories and means of paint application of Pointillism. You should be able to produce your own work using your new skills. Hot and cold drinks with nibbles will be provided.
