Paint an Impressionist still life painting

Art Workshops in Wirral

'Paint an Impressionist Still Life' (SB005)

This workshop was last run on 22nd October 2014. Please contact me to request a repeat running of this workshop. The workshop was initially run as a full-day workshop, but may be condensed to a half-day. However, the longer the day, the more we achieve! More information on my workshops...

Interpretation of a Cézanne painting
Step-by-step tuition guiding students through the interpretation of a painting by Cézanne

This workshop will look at Impressionist still life paintings. It will look in particular at the work of Cézanne and Renoir. Students will be guided through the reproduction of a section of an Impressionist still life painting, following which students will produce a new, unique still life painting from life.

The workshop will take place under my tuition in my home studio - a light and airy conservatory - in the Wirral. Student numbers will be kept to a minimum (2 or 3 students) to facilitate one-to-one tuition. The workshop will offer step-by-step tuition in an informal, friendly atmosphere, where students and tutor can bounce ideas off one another. It is my intention that students enjoy a productive, informative and fulfilling day. The class is suitable for beginners or more experienced artists. More information on my workshops...

10:00 - 10:30

A brief introduction to Impressionist still life painting. We will look at work by several artists, with a principal focus upon Cézanne and Renoir, and discuss how the approach of each artist may have varied.

10:30 - 11:30

Each student will be given a print of an Impressionist still life painting and asked to reproduce aspects of it. You will not be expected to complete this work. It will be used as a means to demonstrate working technique which you will then take into the afternoon's session.

11:30 - 11:45

11:45 - 13:00

Continuation of work on Impressionist reproduction.

13:00 - 14:00

Lunch break

14:00 - 15:15

Students will take what they have learned from the morning session into the production of their own Impressionist-influenced work. Students are encouraged to bring their own still life objects to study, but we can also provide a set-up.

15:15 - 15:30

15:30 - 17:00

Conclusion of students’ studies from life.

Please note that timings are approximate - I will make every effort to ensure that students are fully conversant with appropriate principles before moving on to subsequent stages - there is no rush and you will be under no pressure or expectations. Students may work in either traditional oils, water-mixable oils, alkyds or acrylics. By the end of the workshop you should have a finished Impressionist-influenced still life, and be familiar with basic elements of composition, Impressionist application of paint and use of colour. Hot and cold drinks with nibbles will be provided, as will a cold lunch.
