Paint buildings in oils workshop

Art Workshops in Wirral

'Paint Buildings in Oils' (SB006)

This workshop was last run on 5th November 2014. Please contact me to request a repeat running of this workshop. The workshop was initially run as a full-day workshop, but may be condensed to a half-day. However, the longer the day, the more we achieve! More information on my workshops...

Interpretation of a Hopper painting
Step-by-step tuition guiding students through the interpretation of a painting by Hopper

This workshop will look at the differing ways figurative artists have chosen to represent buildings in paint. It will consider the differing working methods of selected artists and provide an introduction to basic painting techniques. Students will be guided through the reproduction of a section of an 'old master' painting of a building (or buildings), following which students will be guided through the production of a new, unique painting from a photograph of their own choice.

The workshop will take place under my tuition in my home studio - a light and airy conservatory - in the Wirral. Student numbers will be kept to a minimum (2 or 3 students) to facilitate one-to-one tuition. The workshop will offer step-by-step tuition in an informal, friendly atmosphere, where students and tutor can bounce ideas off one another. It is my intention that students enjoy a productive, informative and fulfilling day. The class is suitable for beginners or more experienced artists. More information on my workshops...

10:00 - 10:30

A brief introduction to architectural painting. We will compare and contrast work by two to three artists and discuss how the approach of each artist may have varied.

10:30 - 11:30

Each student will be given a print of an architectural painting and will be asked to reproduce aspects of it. You will not be expected to complete this work. It will be used as a means to demonstrate working technique which you will then take into the afternoon's session.

11:30 - 11:45

11:45 - 13:00

Continuation of work on 'old master' reproduction.

13:00 - 14:00

Lunch break

14:00 - 15:15

Students will take what they have learned from the morning session into the production of their own work. Students may bring their own photographs or they can be supplied.

15:15 - 15:30

15:30 - 17:00

Conclusion of students’ studies from photographs.

Please note that timings are approximate - I will make every effort to ensure that students are fully conversant with appropriate principles before moving on to subsequent stages - there is no rush and you will be under no pressure or expectations. Students may work in whichever medium - traditional oils, water-mixable oils, acrylics, watercolour etc. - you would prefer, though demonstration pieces will be made in oils from original 'old master' oil paintings. By the end of the workshop you should have a finished painting of a building (or buildings), and be familiar with basic elements of composition, application of paint and use of colour. Hot and cold drinks with nibbles will be provided, as will a cold lunch.
