I am a Wirral-based artist, illustrator and tutor. Trained in illustration at Falmouth School of Art in the early 1990s, I have since diversified into still life, landscape and portrait painting.
Painting in an Impressionist-influenced technique in oils or acrylics, I favour subjects with striking contrasts of light and shadow which offer the opportunity to enjoy explorations of colour. I exhibit my artwork sporadically in selected galleries.
Born and raised in the Wirral peninsula in the north west of England, I completed an art and design foundation course at Wirral Metropolitan College on leaving school. Following subsequent completion of an Illustration HND at Falmouth School of Art in 1993, I decided to remain in Cornwall, where I eventually lived for around 12 years before returning to the Wirral.
My painting technique is under constant development; I take inspiration from all art, old or new, traditional or modern. The initial, and perhaps most significant, influences upon my work were the Impressionists and Post Impressionists, whose colour theories are fundamental to my working process. I enjoy painting colour and texture, and it is those elements that I seek in subject matter. On the surface figurative representations, my work embraces more abstract qualities on close analysis; paint is often applied in small brushstrokes over several layers, creating optical vibrations of colour.
In recent years I have returned to working and experimenting in other media – pen, pastel, watercolour, gouache and more. The results of my experiments into drawing and painting subjects from life in various media can be seen on my blog, Drawing upon Life, at www.drawinguponlife.com.
Since 2002 I have run a popular ‘Portraits from Photographs’ service - painting or drawing portraits of family, friends or pets from photos, some of which can be see on the Portraits page of this website.
In 2014 I began running art workshops from my Wirral studio. Workshops offer step-by-step tuition in an informal, friendly atmosphere. For more information please visit the Workshops page.
I am a member of Wirral Society of Arts, Wirral Art (organisers of the Wirral Open Studio Tour) and Deeside Art Group. I serve on the committee of both Wirral Art and Deeside Art Group.
I enjoy listening to old and unfashionable music by artists such as the Beatles, the Kinks, Fairport Convention, CSN, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Richard Thompson and John Martyn. I play acoustic guitar for my own amusement and enjoy listening to classic comedy.
A sports fan, I particularly enjoy following the fortunes of England's cricket team on Test Match Special.
